Bringing over 30 years of experience across parking services, traffic management, and local authority contracts, Duncan joins Portland Traffic as Area Sales Manager with a strong operational and commercial background. His expertise in managing complex projects and building long-term client relationships makes him a valuable addition as the business continues to expand. Let’s get to know him a little better…
Tell us a little about your career journey and how you came into the traffic sector.
My career actually began in the parking industry, where I spent 25 years working in various managerial roles, overseeing operations and managing large local authority contracts, particularly across London. In 2018, I was ready for a new challenge and joined Simmonsigns, which introduced me to the traffic and street lighting sector. Since then, I’ve gained around seven years’ experience within the traffic industry, developing my skills and adapting to the evolving needs of the sector. It’s been a rewarding journey, with plenty of opportunities to grow and take on new responsibilities.
What attracted you to Portland Traffic?
Although Portland Traffic was technically a competitor, I already knew several members of the team and had built strong relationships with them over the years. The company stood out because of the quality of its products and the strong culture within the business. The collaborative environment and shared ambitions for growth really appealed to me, and it felt like the right next step in my career.
What experience do you bring that will add the most value to the team and customers?
I bring a combination of hands-on traffic industry experience along with a great deal of local authority contract management. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on managing complex projects, building strong customer relationships, and delivering practical solutions. This experience helps me identify opportunities to improve efficiency and provide customers with solutions that genuinely work for their operational needs.
How have you found the business since joining?
I’ve felt genuinely welcomed and valued since joining Portland Traffic. It’s a forward-thinking business that encourages development and open discussion, and I’ve found the team very supportive. It’s great to be part of a company that is continuing to evolve and grow.
What excites you most about your role moving forward?
Being part of the company’s continued growth is a big motivation for me. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with existing customers while also building relationships with new ones. Supporting clients from the beginning of a project through to completion and seeing successful outcomes is something I really enjoy.
What industry challenges are you most passionate about helping to solve?
A key challenge is ensuring traffic safety solutions keep pace with advancing technology. Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important, from material choices through to energy-efficient technologies. Being able to contribute to safer roads while also supporting environmentally responsible practices is something I’m passionate about.
How will your experience help clients and their projects?
Having managed complex local authority contracts, I understand the pressures and requirements clients face. Through strong stakeholder engagement and a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions, I help customers select the right products for their needs. My project management background also helps streamline processes and supports better decision-making throughout a project.
And finally, what do you enjoy outside of work?
Outside work, I enjoy supporting my children at their football matches, walking the dog, spending time with family, following Chelsea FC, and planning family holidays whenever possible.
